Acupuncture has been practiced in China for thousands of years.
It involves the use of tiny, hair-like needles that are inserted at certain points to stimulate your body’s own self-healing mechanisms.
How are the points selected?
Acupuncture involves a detailed Chinese Medicine diagnosis. We ask you questions about your body systems, symptoms and stressors. We may look at the surface of your tongue and feel the quality of your pulse at the wrist.
Very specific points are carefully chosen for your particular problem. For example, to
- stimulate sluggish movement
- invigorate blood flow
- release tension
- improve energy
- harmonise body functions
- calm the mind
How does acupuncture work?
Lab studies suggest that acupuncture works on several body systems at once, for example by:
- promoting deep relaxation
- regulating pain signals
- relaxing muscles
- improving sleep
What else happens in a treatment?
Your practitioner may use subtle oriental energy techniques to direct the flow of energy throughout your body. They may also use other therapies such as cupping, moxibustion or massage, depending on your situation.
Acupuncture needles are nothing like those used at the doctor’s surgery. They are only tenths of a millimetre in diameter, like a hair. At this Clinic, acupuncture treatment is usually very comfortable and relaxing. You may even fall asleep!
At all stages we will check in to make sure that you are comfortable with what’s happening. If you’re nervous then we have special techniques that can help you to relax.
How should I expect to feel?
After an acupuncture treatment you will often notice that painful areas feel loose and free and your whole body feels relaxed and light.
